PERFORATED METAL PANELS FROM CRL TRANSFORM
FAÇADE AT "THE LOFTS AT CHEROKEE STUDIOS"

When it came to creating a "green" mixed-use, multi-family landmark in West Hollywood, Rethink Development and Pugh + Scarpa Architects turned to C.R. Laurence to manufacture and engineer the Perforated Panel System used to dress the façade.

The perforated aluminum panels not only serve as architectural elements, but also provide ventilation, help block ambient noise, and allow light and air to enter without sacrificing privacy. To enjoy the view from their decks, residents can open the bi-fold panel sections, or they can close them for privacy and sun control. The result is a constantly changing building front, almost an organic sculpture.
CRL's PPS300C Premier Perforated Panel System was selected for the project. The 300 Series uses an aluminum substructure that is factory fabricated and prepared for ease of installation without the need for field fabrication. The anchoring brackets are engineered to allow expansion and seismic movement. The substructure is then covered with 1/8" (3.2 mm) thick aluminum/stainless steel perforated panels, which are fastened with self-tapping screws in the field by the installer.

What really makes the 300 Series a standout is that they allow for optional swinging or bi-folding doors to be incorporated into the design. The doors act as accordion shutters, which residents open or close at will, creating a sophisticated method of obtaining security, shade, and privacy. Different patterns and perforations can be designed and manufactured by CRL. Several finishes are available including Powder Coat, KYNAR® paint, and brushed, polished, and non-direction metal finishes.

The Lofts at Cherokee Studios pays homage to the site's history, which, in its heyday, was home to some of the music industry's most legendary artists, including Frank Sinatra, Madonna, and John Lennon. The recording studio was razed a few years ago, but the cultural legacy continues as the spaces were designed for musicians and creative types. Two of the twelve lofts feature dedicated recording studio spaces that have been acoustically treated and prepared.

The development is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification from the USGBC, an accomplishment that marks it as the first building of its kind on the West Coast. C.R. Laurence is proud to have had a major role in creating this innovative, artistic statement.
